What is AMI?

Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) combines three core components - intelligent customer premise equipment (or a smart meter), continuous two-way communications, and central office software systems.

A smart meter is installed at the consumer's premises and electronically measures, monitors and helps manage how much energy is used. Information can be sent in near real time, via a two way communications link, to and from the smart meter and the energy retailer's central office. The retailer's central office uses this information to provide consumers with new and enhanced products in real time and to ensure a seamless service experience.

The two-way communications links used include cellular networks, satellite, and radio frequency networks.
